On the 19th of June 35 Beaulieu College Art students embarked on a journey to the Dionysus Sculpture Works (DSW) studio in Pretoria. The creative studio and foundry was established by South African sculptor Angus Taylor in 1998. DSW has expanded significantly over the years, making an important contribution to South African art.
After arriving at the DSW studio, we walked through a maze of magnificent sculptures to get to the warehouse where Angus Taylor was at work. He introduced himself and told us to ‘explore’ the studio. With enthusiasm we all strolled around, curiously examining each art piece while taking photos next to giant figurines. Once we had investigated every possible corner of the studio, we sat down and listened to Angus Taylor as he told us about his past, the studio and his most recent sculptures. He then led us to watch a bronze sculpture being cast. We watched in awe as molten bronze was poured into moulds and immediately turned into a solid sculpture.
Meeting with a professional South African artist was very enlightening and inspiring to all the art students. He gave us a new perspective on art and we glimpsed a snapshot of what the art industry in South Africa is like.
Interacting with Angus Taylor was interesting and entertaining. We thoroughly enjoyed this art excursion and would love to experience more of them in the future.
