Grade Four is characterized by class teaching, where children remain with their class teacher for most of the school day. Grades Five to Seven pupils are exposed to subject teaching, where they visit specialist teachers in specialist facilities, as per the academic timetable.
The academic curriculum includes, among other subjects:
Afrikaans - The main focus of the Afrikaans Department is to teach the spoken language and develop a love for Afrikaans. This is achieved in creative ways so that an atmosphere is fostered in which the pupils look forward to the lessons.
IsiZulu- The main focus of the IsiZulu language is on the four key areas of speaking, listening, writing and reading. The pupils are encouraged to communicate in Zulu, through conversational lessons about real life situations.
Geography – Pupils are exposed to Physical and Human Geography. Physical Geography includes topics on climatology, geomorphology, environmental issues, map work and Atlas skills. Human Geography focuses on population, settlements and social issues.
International and local History - Ancient civilizations and current affairs form part of the History syllabus.
Natural Science - The focus is on four themes – energy and change, matter and materials, planet earth and beyond and life and living. Pupils attend lessons in the laboratory from Grade Five. With a strong environmental focus, children are taught the scientific method through practical work.
Mathematics is taught using apparatus. This is because children mature cognitively and move from learning in a concrete manner to abstract thought. Problem-solving is also a vital component. This area of Mathematics allows the pupils to master the given challenges using various methods. From Grade Five, the classes are split into smaller groups. There is an accelerated class and mixed-ability classes. This provides the pupils with the individual help they require to maximize their mathematical potential.
In Twenty-First Century Critical Skills pupils, in co-operative learning groups, utilize skills in order to design functioning models. Problems are posed and children consider and create a variety of solutions.
Life Orientation including Multifaith – This programme is aimed at promoting healthy relationships among pupils with their families, friends and the opposite sex. FAMSA facilitates an annual workshop with Grade Six and Seven pupils. Four workshops, each one hour long, are designed to provide the adolescents with relationship skills. Boys and girls are separated during these sessions. In Multifaith, we explore major religions of the world. This encourages pupils to respect and value differences and to develop values, such as tolerance and respect.
Grade Four to Seven pupils attend specialist Art classes once a week. The focus is on perceptual drawing and creative expression while working with a variety of materials and techniques. Art history and theory are referred to continuously during lessons and pupils are exposed to the work of a wide variety of past and current artists as well as artistic trends.
In Computers, pupils are exposed to learning in Word, Paint, PowerPoint and Excel. Email and Internet access are also provided. The senior children use their own iPads for creating content.
In the Senior Phase, children read to learn. Their lessons in Media focus on how to access information effectively how to apply it and encourages children to read widely for pleasure.
Music lessons combine learning about the formal elements of music with opportunities for self- expression through performance.
Grade Sevens study Economic and Management Sciences and are involved in an Entrepreneurship exercise during the course of the year. The pupils plan and set up a ‘business’ at school. Over a period of several days, they operate these businesses and provide goods and services to the pupils and parents of the school. Money that is raised goes to the Grade Seven Leavers’ Gift to the school. The gift is decided with input from the pupils and parents in conjunction with ideas from the staff.
