At Kyalami Preparatory Nursery School, we provide a nurturing, inclusive environment where our youngest children are encouraged to explore, create, and grow. Our Pre-Prep programme focuses on developing each child’s ability to think creatively, communicate confidently, and solve problems across social, emotional, and academic areas. Rooted in our motto, Spread your Wings, we work closely with parents to inspire curiosity and help each child reach their full potential within a diverse and supportive community.

Our Curriculum

At KPNS, we believe that true education goes beyond the acquisition of knowledge and skills. It is about nurturing each child’s ability to think creatively, plan thoughtfully, and express their understanding in meaningful ways. Our aim in the Pre-Prep phase is to develop confident, capable learners who can navigate challenges and solve problems across social, emotional, and academic contexts. We focus on building strong foundations that empower our children to engage with the world around them with curiosity, resilience, and a love for learning.

Toddler Class

Our Toddler class provides a nurturing and stimulating environment where learning takes place through purposeful play, language development, and the growth of social and emotional skills. These early foundations are essential to future learning and are developed with patience, consistency, and care. Our experienced and compassionate staff support children as they begin the toilet training journey, helping to ease this process for parents. In addition to sensory-rich and movement-based activities, our Toddlers enjoy weekly specialist sessions including Library, Music, and Playball. A unique feature of the Toddler morning is a quiet nap time after lunch, allowing children to rest and recharge as part of their daily routine.

Grade 000 and 00

Our 3–5 year olds thrive in a nurturing and stimulating environment, where each day is thoughtfully structured and rich with opportunity for growth. Within small class groups, children enjoy a balanced programme that includes musical exploration, storytelling, painting, climbing, and sensory play with sand and water. Specialist activities form an exciting part of their weekly routine, including Playball, Music, Djembe drumming, and Library sessions. A key feature of the indoor programme is our dedicated skills lessons, where children develop essential foundations such as fine motor coordination, midline crossing, body awareness, and perceptual skills. Daily ring lessons offer dynamic group learning experiences that encourage creativity, confidence, and communication. These include drama, discussion, storytelling, and foundational Literacy and Numeracy activities.

Grade 0

Our Grade 0 programme is designed to equip children with the essential skills they need for a smooth transition into formal schooling. At the heart of the year is our comprehensive School Readiness Programme, which includes engaging, rotational activities that build foundational skills in Numeracy, Literacy, and Visual and Auditory Perception. Grade 0 learners also enjoy a range of enriching weekly specialist lessons, including Computers (including robotics and coding), Physical Education (Swimming and Playball), and First Additional Language (isiZulu and Afrikaans). To further support development in Grade 0, our children benefit from a learner support programme designed and taught by a learner support specialist at no additional cost. Tuck is a special highlight each week, and daily ring lessons continue to inspire creativity and communication through Library, Music, Djembe drumming, drama, group discussions, and creative storytelling.

Extra cost activities

At KPNS, we offer a wide range of optional extra-cost activities to enrich your child’s school experience. A full timetable of available activities is provided at the start of each year. As of 2025, we are proud to offer approximately 17 exciting activities, all run by experienced external providers. These activities are billed separately by the individual coaches or service providers.

Each January, parents are invited to attend our Extra-cost showcase held on campus, where all activity providers are available to answer questions and share information. Application forms will be available at the event for those wishing to enrol their child in any of the offered programmes.

Children enrolled in an extra-cost activity are collected from their classroom or the designated waiting class by the relevant coach and escorted to their session.

These optional activities are a wonderful way for children to explore new interests, develop skills, and build confidence in a safe and familiar environment.

School hours and waiting class

At KPNS, we understand the needs of busy families and offer flexible options to support your schedule while ensuring a safe, nurturing environment for your child.

Academic School Day:
Grade 0000, 000 & 00: 08:00 – 12:30
Grade 0: 07:45 – 12:45

Morning Drop-Off & Waiting Class:
Our school gates open at 07:00, and children are welcome to join our morning waiting class, supervised by our caring Assistants. From 07:30, our Teachers join the class to begin the structured school morning.

Afternoon Waiting Class:
After the academic day, we offer an afternoon waiting class for all children until 13:30. During this time, children are supervised by a member of our staff and continue to enjoy a safe and relaxed environment while they wait to be collected.

This extended care option is designed to make your mornings and early afternoons as convenient as possible while maintaining the warm, attentive atmosphere we value at KPNS.

Uniform

Grade 0000 (Toddler Class):
Children in our Toddler Class are not required to wear a uniform. As part of their daily routine includes toilet training, we encourage parents to dress their little ones in comfortable and practical clothing that allows for ease of movement and independence.

Grade 000 – 0:
From Grade 000 onwards, children wear the KPNS school uniform. This not only creates a sense of belonging and pride, but also removes the daily decision of what to wear. We have been intentional in keeping our uniform simple, practical, and cost-effective, understanding the reality of how quickly young children grow. And while we value neatness, paint, glue, and mud stains are more than welcome—they’re a sign of creativity, exploration, and a day well spent!

Aftercare

KPNS offers a daily aftercare program, run by our dedicated KPNS staff. This ensures the same caring, nurturing environment continues seamlessly from the school day into the afternoon. Additionally, we provide holiday care during the April and August school breaks. While the formal academic curriculum pauses during the holidays, we offer a range of engaging and enjoyable activities designed to create a fun, enriching experience for the children. Our programs aim to support families with reliable care while fostering a safe, happy, and stimulating environment year-round.
